I think the most important reason that I can get admissions is my SoP, since my GPA, TOEFL, and GRE are not very distinguished. Even for some schools, they don't look at my letters of recommendation (I get admissions before my advisor submit the letter of recommendation).

我們甚至見過申請文件是這樣開頭的：｢我有個溫暖的家，家裡有爸爸媽媽和弟弟，家人都很支持我繼續深造，假日我們喜歡爬山和攝影、、、」這不但完全偏離主題，也表示申請人對於SoP的文體和功能有認知上錯誤。

此外，申請人對於所申請的學校要有一定了解，尤其是要申請競爭較激烈的碩士學位學程、博士班的學生，如果能在文章中表現出自己對未來的研究領域與該校的師資、教學資源等有相當程度的認識，不但會讓SoP內容更具體，它也傳達了這樣的訊息：｢我在申請前做了功課、申請貴系是充分考慮之後做的決定」這是很基本的、也是非常重要的。
