“在留學諮詢的過程中，我們提供客戶一系列的SoP的寫作技巧與指導。
在寫作方向上，申請人一定要注意：SoP不是自傳、不是個人的回憶錄。
我們甚至見過申請文件是這樣開頭的：｢我有個溫暖的家，家裡有爸爸媽媽和弟弟，家人都很支持我繼續深造，假日我們喜歡爬山和攝影、、、」這不但完全偏離主題，也表示申請人對於SoP的文體和功能有認知上錯誤。
此外，申請人對於所申請的學校要有一定了解，尤其是要申請競爭較激烈的碩士學位學程、博士班的學生，如果能在文章中表現出自己對未來的研究領域與該校的師資、教學資源等有相當程度的認識，不但會讓SoP內容更具體，它也傳達了這樣的訊息：｢我在申請前做了功課、申請貴系是充分考慮之後做的決定」這是很基本的、也是非常重要的。

Remember that a statement of purpose is not your life story. It's a
statement explaining why you want to study at where you're applying and how
that will help you reach your long term career goals.
Here is a basic outline which you can follow to best express your desire to get into the program:
I. Intro, Mention why you got into your field and long term
goals. How do those motivate you to apply for X program at Y University. (That
should be your last sentence of the opening paragraph.)
II. Mention how your previous education prepares you for grad
school.
III. Discuss your professional experience and how you are
meeting challenges that inspire you to pursue further education.
IV. Why is the program you are applying for ideal for you?
Discuss specific aspects of the program that will assist you to learn what you
need in your future professional goals.
This section needs to be more detailed the higher the degree
program and the more competitive the program is:
Brief Outline for School Specific Passages in
your SoP
1. Introduce the school you want to apply for
again and briefly say why you are interested in that school.
e.g.:
The University of Heidelberg is of course an obvious choice for
me given your esteemed institution's long tradition of expertise in the field
of historical linguistics and ancient languages.
2. Give a brief overview of the target
department.
Describe its structure and attractive features to you as a
student and tell what emphasis, labs or research group that you'd like to
participate in and why.
3. Detail any special linkages between your
own past research or current or future research interests. Identify who might
be some professors that you'd like to work with and why. Name the subjects they
study or projects they head and how could you potentially contribute and
benefit from involvement.
4. Detail other coursework and other
professors research that is of interest to you and how might that benefit you
in your own research and potentially in any future career work that you may
embark upon.
5. Mention any other features of the program,
special facilities, or other resources that attract you to their program.
Include any internship possibilities you are interested in and how they would
prepare and propel you in your future career.
6. Conclude this segment by stating how you
believe that you are suitable for that program and how you might contribute to
the program and to the university community as a whole. Mention if applicable
how study at this university might help to build ties with or train others in
your home country.
V. Describe your future professional goals in detail and tell
how your graduate degree education can help you achieve those goals.
VI. Conclusion -- reiterate your goals and add personal aspects
about how you are looking forward to study at Y University, etc.

顧名思義，所謂 "statement of purpose" "目的陳述"，申請人應充分利用這項文件，將申請之目的和動機交代清楚。換個角度來說，申請人應多加思考，如何利用這項文件協助admissions committee了解： “為什麽提出申請？為什麽要申請我們這所學校、系所？為什麼申請這個特定的program？如果我們錄取你，你會想學些什麽、做些什麽、研究些什麼？學成之後你將利用所學之知識與技能，未來在事業上達到什麼成就？”
我們也請申請人特別注意SoP不是自傳、不是回憶錄 (有些系所甚至嚴格要求SoP內容不得重複CV或personal statement已提及過的內容。)，SoP是讓有備而來的申請人陳述為什麼他們符合資格、具有什麼優秀特質符合是該program所需要的。
為什麼強調"有備而來"？
因為有很多申請人(特別是華人)，他們留學的原因是：看別人也留學、爸爸媽媽希望我留學、或是因為我已經有綠卡了，留學後就順便在國外住下來。
這些申請人會發現在SoP寫作上困難重重甚至難以下筆。尤其，當SoP的篇幅較短時 (例如500字內)，教授對你參加過攝影社還是熱舞社、多麼熱心公益、是怎麼辛苦準備大學或研究所考試的經歷是沒有興趣的。對admissions committee來說，那些內容也無助他們評估未來這個學生是否能學以致用，在職場上找到合適自己的位置。相反地，對於那些對未來的研究路徑或事業已有所規劃的申請人來說，SoP就是一項利器。他們能夠妥善利用SoP讓教授知道：他能招到一個合格、研究領域相符的優秀學生，他所招收的學生將有足夠技能、知識勝任學習與研究。
我們在文章中提供的大綱不是公式，只是希望協助申請人做更完整的闡述、這些寫作提示指出一般 "statement of purpose" 應涵蓋的主要內容，而寫作順序也大致可以按主要段落的排序進行說明。盡管使用結構提示的方式寫作較為制式，但這有助於委員會或教授在最短時間內找到他們想要了解或有興趣的內容。英文寫作能力強的申請人，當然可以自行利用這些寫作提示、發揮統整能力、獨創性，寫出獨樹一幟的文章。
