Dear Readers,
In the last post I mentioned that the thesis proofreading season
is approaching but we still take occasional cases involving academic
applications as well – some extreme early birds who want to begin a very
thorough search and those applying to universities that are not within the
usual range of schools in the US and the UK. Particularly there are schools in
Europe and specifically in Germany that have later application deadlines and
quickly notify applicants of their acceptance or rejection. For example we had
one client last year who gained admission to several MBA programs in
Germany -- with her first choice notifying her in only two weeks after
submission of the application of her admission. Those interested in business
and engineering and the hard sciences can find great opportunities in these
so-called non-traditional destinations for study abroad.
Today I want to encourage all of you to be a bit adventurous and
look for programs outside of the US and UK to apply to. One of the big
advantages of attending graduate programs in Germany and the Scandinavian
countries (Norway, Sweden and even Finland and Denmark) is that fees are much,
much lower than in the US and even the UK. In fact in Germany and some schools
in Norway and Sweden all studies are ENTIRELY FREE if you merit gaining
admission to those universities. Typically these programs are conducted in
English as well. An added advantage is that you can perhaps get a start on a
third language or at least understand life and business in that country better
which can add to your skills set after graduation. The EU still has more
progressive policies for after education employment as well. Other than Germany
our clients have gained admission to universities or been studying in
Australia, Sweden, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe.
{Some of the targeted schools of our clients to which many have gained
admission were universities in Kiel, TU Freiburg, EPFL, Munich, Ulm, Melbourne, Darwin, Waterloo, Amsterdam, Groningen, Eindhoven, and ENAC just to name a few off the top of my
head.} In addition the EU has a scholarship program similar to the American
Fulbright program, ERASMUS, to which you can apply.
In addition, I know that some of you were amazed to learn about
opportunities in the Middle East as well. Places like the Masdar Institute in Qatar offer great
options for adventurous students interested in innovative fields. The
world is changing into a true global community. Depending upon your field and
your future professional plans these non-traditional destinations may actually
offer you a much better value for investment and follow-up career
opportunities. These certainly beat dai-ban funneling you off
into third rate schools in the West that no one ever heard of. They will just
run you through a certain template and even tell you blatant lies saying no one
ever goes elsewhere to these destinations to which I encourage you to consider.
They don’t go there because how can dai-ban justify charging
you with high prices for applying to a school that has a tuition wavier like
for example the University of Malmo in Sweden had before where 3 Chinese
clients of ours completed their tertiary degrees.
Moreover, we have several clients that are participating in
graduate school in Korea and Japan as well.
Even though I was raised in America I must confess that I am
rather worried about the state of higher education in the US. I feel that it is
in decline and watered down with too much emphasis on making money from
students rather than offering them the optimal experience for a huge investment
in their education (one reason why we maintain a black-list of schools that are
known to have dealt badly with clients or acted unethically). And in the
UK with a Tory government again in power it does not bode well for higher
education as they severely cut funding for universities -- with the exception
of Scotland that maintains an independent policy and much better funding of
education – about which we can offer you specific guidance in regard to all
universities in Scotland. So, along with the globalization trends and rise of
Brics countries, I predict that in five to ten years our most successful
clients will have attended these what now seem exotic universities in places
other than America or England.
Don't hesitate to contact us if you have such an adventure and
wise educational investment in mind! We would love to be of service to you. I
am especially looking forward to sending the first clients of ours ever to Russia
or India! Be brave everyone! "Follow your Bliss!"

Studying in the U.S.
Higher education in the United States is quite multi-faceted and decentralized. It is characterized by competition and autonomous institutions of higher learning. Presently, there are around 4,180 colleges and universities in the US. Of these, over 1,700 are so-called "two-years institutions," and 2,450 are "four-year instutitions". In addition to the roughly 1,700 public institutions (which are operated by the states, cities, or counties in which they are located), there are also more than 2,480 private colleges and universities. "Community colleges" make up the bulk of the American two-year institutions and are quite practical for beginning students wishing to take introductory or general language courses. There are currently over 14 million students registered at US institutions of higher learning, and the vast majority of these students - some 11 million - study at public universities and colleges. Women make up the majority (over 56%0 of American university students. Also of interest is the high percentage (nearly 40%) of part-time students, who attend university while employed full-time.
Undergraduate and Graduate Studies
Besides academic courses of study, institutions of higher learning in the U.S. also offer praxis-oriented programs for advanced vocational training. Such programs are found mostly at two-year "community colleges." In addition to certificates adn diplomas, a student can earn an "associate degree" after two years of study.
The typical academic degree earned by American students is the "Bachelor of Arts" (BA) or respectively the "Bachelor of Science" (BS). These degrees are awarded following the completion of four years of studies. In the first two years of their studies, American students take a number of required courses in general subject areas. After the second year, American students take a major (or two), and spend the remaining two years taking courses in these academic disiplines (although they are not limited to them). After having earned the "bachelors," most Americans end their "academic careers" and look for jobs. One calls the four-year course of study for thet BA/BS the "undergraduate studies." Those who decide to pursue their education further can earn a Master of Arts or Master of Science, repectively, in one or two years. These so-called "Master's Degrees" are offered only at universities, and not at colleges. Likewise, only universities offer professional degrees, as for example the Juris Doctor (for law), the Doctor of Medicine (for medicine), and the well-known Master of Business Administration, or MBA. It usually takes two to four years to complete these professional degrees.
Earning a doctorate (Doctor of Philosophy, or Ph.D.) in the United States takes between four and six years. The first phase of one's doctoral studies usually lasts two years and is conducted with an extensive examination in all the subject areas studies until that point. This examination is knows as the "preliminary examination" or alternatively as the "qualifying examination." Following the successful completion of this examination, the student may begin his reseach for his doctoral dissertation.
Continuative studies which lead to the M.A./M.S., professional degrees, or the Ph.D., are known as "graduate studies."
