This growth not only corresponds to the increasing calls that U.S. students need international knowledge, intercultural communication skills, and global perspectives (IIE, 2007, 2009; Lincoln Commission, 2005), but also reflects the growth of studies about beneficial outcomes associated with study abroad around the world (McKeown, 2009; Milstein, 2005; Pascarella and Terenzini, 2005). Despite the participation of study abroad has increased, it still remains relative low when compared with nearly 9 million students enrolled in four-year institutions in the United States. As the top destination country of international students, the recent trends in U.S. study abroad are unique from other regions due to the characteristics of decentralization and autonomy in American Higher Education.
