The Baiyue Corridor and its Transformation into the Tea-Horse Trade Route: An exploration of the diffusion of cultural elements along this route
Chen Baoya (陳保亞)
Abstract
According to Chinese historical
documents from antiquity, the "Baiyue" people were extant in a wide territory
from today's Zhejiang province in China to northern Vietnam from sometime in
the first millennium BCE only to later slowly migrate to southwest China as
well as across into South-East Asia and even as far as Assam in India.
The author asserts
that their branching trade and migration routes may be viewed in total as a
cultural corridor, the "Baiyue Corridor," that formed a major conduit of trade
and culture to and through the Southern Himalaya, the study of which helps us
to understand and explain the establishment of cultures in southern and eastern
Asia. Moreover, to some extent these ancient paths were incorporated into the
subsequent medieval Tea-Horse Trade Route by the era of the Southern Sung
Dynasty onward, reviving dormant cultural pathways. This is particularly
evident in the case of the Old Yunnan-Guangxi Route involved in the horse
trade, with its hub centered on Hengshanzhai (横山寨) which had a propitious effect upon
all the trade carried out through that network especially along the Tea-horse
Route's two branches along the Youjiang and Zuojiang Rivers. This
transformation of the former Baiyue Corridor into a flourishing and crucial
conduit of trade and culture led directly to the development and formation of
the cultures of South China and South East Asia.
Keywords: Keywords: Old Yunnan-Guangxi Route, Ancient Baiyue Route, Baiyue Corridor, "Ancient" Tea-Horse Route
